What is an Online Video Consultation (Telehealth)?

An Online Video Consultation is the delivery of health care through an interactive audio or video platform.

How does physiotherapy work using an online video consultation?

It’s very similar to the traditional face to face physiotherapy that you have experienced in the past. The booking process is the same. The format of the consult is the same. The therapist will take the time to understand your issue, then run through some functional tests based on what you have told them. This may include demonstrating a movement (or of lack of movement) and indicating where your pain source is. This type of assessment is guided by you and your function. It’s a really effective way to get to the bottom of what’s going on by looking at exactly what it is that is giving you pain or symptoms.

It might surprise you that an online consultation can deliver great outcomes similar to face to face physiotherapy. But how do we treat you if we can’t touch you? – Great question. We only use hands-on treatment for a very small proportion of our face-to-face patients anyway, around 10%. That is because if we look at the research, education + exercise have been shown to provide better results than hands-on treatment. This is what we call high-value evidence-based practice, empowering you to take control of your own health.

Where is the best place for the consult to take place?

Ensure the computer, tablet or smart phone is stable and you can be comfortably seated in front of the camera. Be prepared to move around as part of the assessment, it might be a good idea to clear a little bit of space behind you. Please ensure you have good lighting and minimal background noise where possible (we appreciate you and members of your household may well all be at home together).

What should I wear for the consult?

If you are being treated for a lower limb concern – we recommend you wear shorts. If you are being treated for an upper limb concern – a singlet is helpful. If we are treating a back concern please be prepared to remove your shirt, (if you are a female client wear a sports crop for your comfort) the important thing is for the therapist to see how you are moving (sometimes this can be tricky if a baggy t-shirt is in the way).

What if I’m not tech-savvy and have never used an online platform?

You’ve no need to worry… the process is straight forward. At Fluid Physio we recommend the platform Zoom for your desktop computer or laptop. We simply send you a confirmation email with a link. Around 10 minutes before the appointment time, click on the link, it will direct you to the waiting room. When the therapist is ready for you, they will send you an invite you to the online treatment room, connecting you to their screen. You can expect the consult to last up to 40mins depending on your needs.

What happens if I don’t have a laptop/desktop computer? Can I just use my smart phone?

That’s not an issue, you will just need to download the Zoom App (click the link here) and walk through the steps.

What happens if my internet cuts out?

Simply go back into the email and click on the link. You will be directed back to the video consult.

How do I pay for my consult and get my private health rebate?

You will be sent an invoice with your confirmation email. It’s like a flight, you pay before you leave. Transfer the funds directly into our bank account and send a copy of the transaction receipt to us. Australian Health Funds have announced April 14, Private Health Rebates will now available for Telehealth Physiotherapy consults. Click here to read the full article.

Can a family member attend the appointment with me?

Yes of course. Just ensure both of you have a seat in front of the computer and can hear the therapist. It is difficult for the therapist to hear if someone is too far away from the microphone on the computer.

Are telehealth consults safe, private and confidential?

Yes, all consultations are private and confidential. Exactly the same if you were in the clinic.

What happens if I am running late?

Please let us know ahead of time but we can’t guarantee the availability of the therapist. If the therapist is running late, please be patient and understanding, they will be with you as soon as possible.

What happens if I need to reschedule?

Please just give us a call and we will arrange another appointment.
